More than 200 female students from eight schools in the North Penn School District (NPSD) have been meeting since February as part of the international movement, Girls on the Run, that culminated in a 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, May 18 at Montgomery County Community College.

NPSD is one of 26 school districts in Montgomery and Delaware counties who participated in this initiative. Representing the NPSD in this year' s Girls on the Run program were teams from Gwynedd Square, Hatfield, Inglewood, Knapp, Montgomery, North Wales, Walton Farm and York Avenue elementary schools. Each of the teams were led by between eight and 12 parent and staff volunteer coaches. The after-school, volunteer program' s curriculum focused on girls in grades three through eight. Teams met for 10 weeks, twice a week for 90 minutes to learn emotional and relational skills intended to build self-awareness, confidence, goal setting and practical life skills. Each session devoted approximately 60 minutes to movement and lessons and the remaining 30 minutes to walking, jogging or running.

The program for the 2018-2019 school year culminated in a community 5K race on Saturday, May 18 at Montgomery County Community College.

Girls on the Run International was established in 1996 in Charlotte, North Carolina by Molly Barker. What started with 13 girls in one school has grown to over 200 councils in all 50 states and the District of Columbia. Girls on the Run is a 501(c)3 nonprofit organization dedicated to creating a world where every girl knows and activates her limitless potential and is free to boldly pursue her dreams.

The NPSD would like to congratulate each of the 216 student participants in the completion of their 5K race and thank the parent and staff volunteer coaches for their efforts and dedication to this meaningful program.

Girls on the Run would love to have more NPSD elementary schools on board for the 2020 season. For more information, please click here.
